Winchester’s Lady Falcons were too tall, too talented, too athletic, and too deep for the New Castle Trojans Saturday in the finale of the New Castle Shootout, whipping the host school 97-32.

Maci Chamberlin got the Falcons on the scoreboard first, driving the lane and delivering the left-handed lay up. Maddy Meek countered with a basket for the Lady Trojans to tie the score.

Maci’s two free throws and a basket by Maddie Lawrence gave Winchester a 6-2 advantage, but it was ephemeral or short-lived. New Castle went on a 7-0 run to lead 9-6. Karsen Morgan initiated the run with a three-point play. Meek followed with two quick scores, the second on an offensive put-back.

That was the last time for celebration on the home sidelines. The Falcons scored the final 12 points of the first frame, leading 19-9 at the first stop, and the onslaught had commenced.

Maddie Lawrence’s rebound basket began the binge. Maci Chamberlin followed with a pair of charity tosses, sending Winchester into the lead for the final time. Morgan Lawrence supplied a free toss, Becca Chamberlin connected on two hoops, while Gena Moore and Morgan Lawrence scored the final four points at the free throw stripe.

Ten second stanza points by Maddie Lawrence led the Falcons to a 29-11 advantage in the quarter. Becca Chamberlin had six points, Taylor Hicks four points, while Morgan Lawrence tossed in three tallies, and Moore, Taylor Baker, and Brooklynn Hummel added a bucket each.

Mackenzie Bridgeman and Morgan netted four points apiece to lead the Trojan charge. Jaycie Reeves hit a hoop and Chloe York drained a free toss for New Castle. Winchester led 48-20 at the break.

Coach Holly Gutierrez’s squad rambled to another 29 points in the third period, while holding the Trojans to just six points. Morgan Lawrence paced the Falcon attack during the session with eight points. Maddie Lawrence and Becca Chamberlin netted five points apiece, Caitlyn Campbell collected four, while Lily Lanter, Baker, and Hummel procured two points, and Hicks added a foul shot.

Bridgeman scored four points in the third period again for New Castle. The other two points were scored by Sakagawea Watson, the freshman granddaughter of former New Castle and Indiana University legend, Kent Benson.

The Falcons led 77-26 entering the fourth and final frame. Seven girls scored for Winchester in the final eight minutes, with Campbell tossing in five points to lead the way. Hicks and Lily Lanter had a pair of baskets, Maddie Lawrence, Maci Chamberlin, and Moore added a hoop each, while Nevaeh Lanter connected on one of her two free throws.

Meanwhile, New Castle received a three-pointer from Meek, two freebies from Macayla McGowan, and one free throw from Reeves. If Winchester was on a quest to reach 100 points on the scoreboard, its last ditch chance came on a long Lily Lanter shot barely across mid-court that clanked off the rim at the final horn.

No one reached double figures for the 1-7 New Castle Trojans. Meek led the way with nine points. She was closely followed by Bridgeman and Morgan with eight and seven points respectively. Meek grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

All 11 Winchester players scored, with three reaching double digits. Maddie Lawrence led the parade with 21 markers. Becca Chamberlin added a season high 15 points, while Morgan Lawrence notched her first double-figure scoring game of her young career with 14 tallies.

Morgan actually achieved a double-double by grabbing a team-high 10 caroms. Big sister, Maddie finished with nine boards, while Campbell, Hummel, and Hicks snared six rebounds each.

The Falcons will take a 7-0 record into their next contest with Delta, a game at the Winchester Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
