Last Saturday afternoon, May 11, Meridian Health Services held an event at the Winchester Field House to benefit their Project SAFE. SAFE being an acronym for Substance Awareness and Family Education. As its name suggests, the Project SAFE mission is to raise awareness of the dangers related to substance use and educate and encourage children to make positive choices.
Entertainment was provided by the band Dyslexic Funk who performed a variety of classic rock and pop songs throughout the afternoon. Children could enjoy a variety of fun and educational carnival games, face-painting, and a bouncy house. Pizza donated by Pizza Hut, and pie provided by Wick’s Pies was available to enjoy. Many local organizations had booths promoting their services, including the Randolph County YMCA, The Journey Home, Brit’s Wonderful Learners Pre-school, The Winchester Police Department, and booths for the many facets of Meridian Health Services.
There was also a raffle with prizes ranging from gift certificates to a television, donated by a number of local businesses and individuals including the House of Flavors, Pizza House, Frank Miller Lumber, the Randolph County YMCA, Craez Dezignz by Candace Cox, Sophia Binkley, Julie Parrott, Dyslexic Funk, and Meridian Health Services.
The event was sponsored by Drug Free Randolph County, Indiana Michigan Power, Ohio Valley Gas, and Brit’s Wonderful Learners Pre-school. Meridian Health Services is hoping to make this an annual event. A similar event will be held at the community center in nearby Portland in September.
