NEW CASTLE – Monroe Central capped off an impressive week Saturday at the New Castle Shootout.

The Class 2A No. 7 Golden Bears were especially tough on the defensive end and beat No. 11 Cloverdale 43-33. The win kept Brock Morrison’s squad unbeaten at 4-0.

Earlier in the week, the Bears knocked Northeastern off its unbeaten perch with an impressive 57-43 victory.

In four games, Monroe Central’s defense has been stifling as no opponent has scored more than 43 points. The Bears, meanwhile, are averaging 58 points per outing.

“I thought we did a great job defensively this week against both Northeastern and Cloverdale – two good teams with a combined record of 10-1,” Morrison said. “Our girls rose to the occasion and held both teams under their scoring average.”

Morrison praised his team’s unselfish play against Northeastern. We did a great job of sharing the basketball and getting it to the open person to be able to knock down shots or make winning plays.”

Against Cloverdale, he said, it was a different scenario, coming off the Thanksgiving holiday.

“I thought (the layoff) had an effect on our jump shooting. Cloverdale was very physical and the officials let us play. Our kids had to overcome some adversity and make enough plays on offense for us to win the game.

“We have to watch some film this week and get some things cleaned up, but overall I’m very happy with the progress we’ve made and our ability to close out some tough games so far this season.”

The tough games continue for the Bears as they face Union City, Winchester, Shenandoah, Yorktown and Lapel all before Christmas. The five teams have a combined record of 25-4. Winchester and Shenandoah are both top 10 teams and are undefeated.

Bears not at their best, still beat Cloverdale by 10

Hannah Bolton scored 15 points and Katie Pike as the Bears overcame a poor shooting night by using great defense to top the Clovers.

Catherine Duncan had six points in the first half to help the Bears take a commanding 23-10 lead. Bolton scored 10 in the second half and Pike had five in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.

Pike and Gabby Beckham controlled the boards for Monroe Central, each collecting 10 as the Bears won the battle of the boards, 38-24. Brooke Bolton rattled the Clovers defensively and led the Bears with four steals.

The Bears made just 17 of 56 from the field for 30 percent. Cloverdale also made just 30 percent of their fielders, making good on 13 off 44.

Bolton is scoring 21.3 points, nearly five assists, five rebounds and four steals after the first four contests.

The Bears made 21 of 50 fielders for 42 percent but just hit 2 of 13 from three-point land.
