UNION CITY, Ind. – In what can only be classified as a stunning upset, Union City knocked off Class A No. 6 Monroe Central Wednesday night, 58-53.
Most know the Lady Indians have been rising fast, but few could have believed Sarah Black’s team was quite ready to defeat the Bears, who came in undefeated won the last two matchups by nearly 26 and 30 points.
But a team that features a strong sophomore class and a couple of seniors who played in the 2016 state tournament were up to the task.
Skylie Lutz scored 23 points, Mariah Claywell had 10, Mackenzie Gree 9 and Emily Livingston 8 as the Indians edged in front after three periods and held off to top the Bears.
The win, coupled with a win on Saturday over Mississinawa Valley, pushed the Indians mark to 5-2 and elevated their ranking in the most recent Class A polls to No. 11.
Lutz did much of her damage down the important fourth quarter stretch, scoring eight points after netting six in the third period. Claywell also scored six in the third.
Green, a great outside shooter, made big trifectas in the second and third quarter, while Livingston patrolled the paint and made it difficult for the Bears to get much inside.
As has been the case much of the season for the Bears, Hannah Bolton carried the scoring load and finished with 27 points, a bit over her season average. Katie Pike added seven points in support.
“It seemed like a lot of things clicked for us against the Bears,” Black said of the victory. “We have had a lot of discussions about roles and jobs on the team and what that looks like. I think the girls are starting to understand what they are capable of when they come together.”
The Indians defeated crosstown rival Mississinawa Valley 74-35 on Saturday. Read more on how the Indians picked up their sixth win in Thursday’s News-Gazette.
