Union City’s Mariah Claywell led all scorers with 24 points, which is exactly the number of points the Indians had over Randolph Southern (68-44) at the end of the first round of the 2021 Randolph County Tournament. Claywell gave her team the momen-tum it needed as she scored 10 points in the first quarter helping the Indians to an early 17-11 lead. Randolph Southern’s Kaibre Stephan put up five points in the first quarter in an endeavor to keep the Rebels in the game. But Union City’s offense exploded with 18 points in the second quarter leaving the Rebels in a 35-18 hole at the end of the first half. Six Lady Indians, Claywell, Jodi Carpenter, Emily Evans, Skylie Lutz, Katherine Elliott, and Emily Livingston put points on the board in the second quarter. Southern struggled offensively getting scoring help from three: Stephan, Brianna Smith, and Jewelia Austin. The Rebels bounced back offen-sively in the third scoring 14 points, but could not stop the 25 point offensive attack of the Indians. Although South-ern outscored Union City in the fourth 12-8, the game ended with the 24 point Lady Indian victory. UC Coach Sarah Black was pleased with her team’s passing and shooting. “The girls played together and did a nice job of finding one another when the defense was tight on them but off their teammates. They also made good decisions on when to shoot and when to pass.” For Union City, Claywell ended with 24 points and seven steals. Carpen-ter added 13 points and handed out five assists. Lutz contributed 11 points and seven assists. Livingston scored nine points, and Elliot finished with four points. Evans, Carlee Rismiller, and Heather Lawrence scored two pints each, and Andrea Sanders had one point. Stephan led the Lady Rebels with 18 points. Austin scored seven points, Smith and Alyssa Allen added four points each, Olivia Thurston had three points, and Leann Wigginton, Court-ney Clear, Allie Black, and Lilly Parrett scored two points each.
