Four Randolph County students have recently been recognized by Coca-Cola as semifinalists in its prestigious scholarship program.
Winchester’s Lindsey Herrera and Grant Wagner, Randolph Southern’s Leah Keesling, and Union City’s Derick Williams were among the 1,928 high school students selected as semifinalists.
These four seniors are in the running for 150 college scholarships worth $20,000.
The 1,928 semifinalists were selected from a pool of 93,075 students from across the country based on their academic excellence, leadership, and service demonstrated in school and community activities.
A joint effort of Coca-Cola bottlers across the country, and The Coca-Cola Bottling Company, the Coca-Cola Scholars Program is the largest corporate-sponsored, achievement-based scholarship program in the United States.
With the addition of the 2020 class, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will have provided more than 6,300 Coke Scholars nationwide with over $72 million in scholarships over the course of 32 years.
“We believe that identifying these young leaders throughout the country and encouraging their passion for serving others not only empowers the students, but also lifts up those around them,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Foundation.
In addition to receiving college scholarships, Herrera, Wagner, Keesling, and Williams, if selected, will be welcomed into a vibrant and growing family of alumni that have become a powerful force for positive change in the world. Scholarship winners network and collaborate with seasoned alumni as they transition to college.
The next phase for the Randolph County semifinalists is to complete applications that include essays, recommendations, and transcripts.
An independent scholarship selection committee will review the applications and narrow the field to 250 Regional Finalists by the end of January. Those finalists will participate in online or in-person interviews.
In March, 150 Coca-Cola Scholars will be selected. They will travel to Atlanta in April for a celebratory banquet.
