Union City’s Carpenters is top singles player

Winchester, Union City and Randolph Southern all had champs at Saturday’s Randolph County Tennis showdown.

In the end, it was the host Falcons to come away with the team championship by winning titles at three of the five positions.

Union City’s John Carpenter, in winning at number one singles, can stake claim as the county’s top singles player after winning matches over Winchester’s Alex Pegg and Randolph Southern’s Tyler Fink. He will be the one to beat in the upcoming sectional in a field that also includes Jay County. Pegg topped Fink 6-0, 6-1, in the other No. 1 singles match.

Winchester’s Nick Dunica was the top dog at number two singles and is the 2019 Randolph County champ. His Falcon mate Ross Culy took top honors at number three singles.

In the match for second place at No. 2 singles, Southern’s Jake Mifsud topped Union City’s Tanner Spence, 6-3, 6-2. Union City’s Cale Jefferis blanked Southern’s Tyler Holguin at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

At number one doubles it was Randolph Southern’s Colton Fisher and Jake Good earning the title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Winchester’s Beman Welch and Grant Wagner and a 6-2, 6-1 win over Union City’s Bryten Stewart and Brayden Hoggatt.

Falcons Levi Slusher and Drew Loyd avenged an earlier loss to Southern’s Ethan Haines and Hagan Gambrel, 6-2, 6-4, and also topped Union City’s Kyle Buckingham and Parker Kerns to win the title.

Winchester defeated Randolph Southern 4-1 and Union City 4-1. Southern won a close match against Union City, 3-2.
