Ullom, Jones, Smithson-Burciaga pace Monroe Central to first win

DALEVILLE – Monroe Central’s boys’ basketball team opened Mid-Eastern Conference play Friday by venturing west and defeating the Broncos of Daleville, 58-47. 

It was the first win of the season for the Bears, who lost a close verdict last week at Tipton.

Sophomore Jackson Ullom led the Golden Bears with 19 points and six assists, while freshman Luke Jones connected on four 3-pointers for 12 points. Gavin Smithson Burciaga contributed 12 points and led Monroe Central with five rebounds. Logan Patterson led a strong defensive effort with three steals.

The Bears won on the scoreboard in each of the first three quarters to build a 13-point lead entering the final stanza.

The Bears made 21 of 45 field goals for the game for 47 percent shooting. They made 14 trips to the free throw line, making 8 for 57 percent.

It was the second of three road games to open the season for the Bears. This was the fourth straight win over the Broncos (1-3).

The Bears travel on Dec. 13 to Bluffton.
