A suspect is in custody after a shooting incident Thursday on Winchester's east side.

Winchester Police Chief John Reed reported that he received a call at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday from a relative of a female subject who had been shot by a neighbor after an argument.

Police arrived on the scene to find a woman bleeding from her back after apparently being shot while mowing her lawn. She was treated at the scene and transported to Reid Hospital in Richmond with non-life threatening injuries.

Reed said the suspect in the shooting had fled the scene and returned to her residence. Police surrounded the residence, obtained a warrant, and the Randolph County Emergency Response Team was summoned to the scene.

Once on the scene, police called for anyone in the house to come out and two subjects came out and surrendered to police. After about 20 minutes, another female exited the house.

SWAT team members would enter the house and locate a female, who they apprehended without incident. She was arrested and incarcerated in Randolph County Jail and is currently being held on an unrelated warrant charge.

Police located a pellet gun inside the residence but have not determined whether it was the weapon used in the shooting.

The Winchester Police Department is continuing its investigation. Reed said charges are expected to be filed and the suspect's name will be released in the next few days.
