Sweet Shoppe joins collection

The Union City Downtown Revitalization Group has announced its most recent choice for the series of Union City landmarks being highlighted in a collection of wooden replicas.

The newest landmark in the series is The Sweet Shoppe, the favorite hangout of the teenagers of the 1950s and 1960s.

The Kirshbaum building, which once was downtown's tallest department store and which now houses The Antique Mall, was the first collectible in the series. The Post Office on the State Line, signifying the connection between Union City's two parts, was the second replica.

Produced by Cat's Meow Village of Wooster, Ohio, the cost of each collectible is $20, and the proceeds from the campaign go towards DRG projects. Those projects include developing activities to bring people to Union City and working with local government officials on a grant for downtown improvement.

Shelly King, president of the DRG, said the collectibles make a good gift, both for locals and for those living away from Union City.

The latest edition, The Sweet Shoppe, will arrive in time for the DRG's Christmas in the City event on December 11. Prepaid orders are now being accepted. Orders may be made at the Union City Antique Mall, Jo's Corner Florist, The Corner Cupboard, the Union City Arts Depot and the Chamber of Commerce.

The earlier choices, the Kirshbaum Building and the Post Office, may also be purchased at the above locations.

The DRG plans to release a new piece each quarter. For more information, call 765-964-6080.
