Local election summary

Randolph County voters in Tuesday's election voted the same as much of the rest of Indiana, favoring Republican and incumbent candidates.

The local vote for president was 5,787 votes (53.48 percent) for Republican John McCain; 4,839 votes (44.72 percent) for Democrat Barack Obama; 177 votes for Libertarian Bob Barr; and 18 write-in votes.

Randolph County's vote for governor was 6,267 (59.49 percent) for Republican incumbent Mitch Daniels and 3,987 (37.85 percent) for Democratic challenger Jill Long Thompson. Libertarian candidate Andy Horning received 280 votes.

The State Attorney General race locally gave 5269 votes (51.83 percent) for Republican Greg Zoeller and 4895 votes (48.15 percent) for Democrat Linda Pence.

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction race saw 5,624 votes (56.38 percent) for Republican Tony Bennett and 4,348 votes (43.59 percent) for Democrat Richard D. Wood.

In the race for District 6 US Representative, incumbent Republican Mike Pence defeated Democrat Barry Welsh by a margin of 6,978 votes to 3,388 (65.61 percent to 31.86 percent).

Local candidates running unopposed for reelection included: Superior Court Judge Peter Haviza, Circuit Court Clerk Claudia Thornburg and County Coroner Duane Petry.
