United Auto Workers Local 494 members voted Thursday to accept Navistar's proposal for terms to bring pickup truck assembly work to the Workhorse plant in Union City. The vote was 113 in favor and 28 against.
The vote was taken during a meeting Thursday at Husted Hall at the Fairgrounds.
Thursday's vote drew a high percentage of those eligible to vote, 141 of the approximately 165 members of Local 494.
Navistar is the parent company of Workhorse Custom Chassis, which presently is tied to the recreational vehicle market that has sustained major losses in an economy of tight credit and high fuel prices.
The work schedules for Local 494 members have been very sporadic for quite some time. Some weeks there is only one or two days of work, and some times plant shutdowns have lasted for weeks.
The possibility of new work at the Union City plant is welcome news for
the local economy. Schools in Union City have seen major declines in enrollments, and there is a higher-than-normal number of homes for sale and for rent.
As one union member said, "We need the work."
