Planting a red promise to be drug-free

In honor of Red Ribbon Week, Driver Middle School students Monday planted 200 red tulip bulbs in front of the school building around a pine tree. Called "Plant a Promise," the gardening event was just one of many activities planned throughout the week to encourage drug-free living.

"Planting a Promise is a nationwide event in which schools across the U.S. participate in to celebrate Red Ribbon Week (Oct. 26-Nov. 1)," said DMS Guidance Counselor and Red Ribbon coordinator Melissa Combs.

After several students from all three middle school grades were nominated by staff members, they took their spades and shovels outside during science class during the day to "Plant A Promise to Stay Drug-Free." Combs said planting the flower bulbs will signify to the community DMS is a drug-free school. Hopefully, a beautiful red border will bloom next spring around Alcohol Awareness Week. Additional DMS Red Ribbon Week activities include "Dress up Days" and "Be a Lifesaver." Also, students can sign a pledge to stay drug-free, participate in door decoration competitions, win prizes, enjoy snacks and join in fun activities reminding them of the importance of living a drug-free life.
