The Randolph Southern School Board at its Sept. 9 meeting saw a presentation by Performance Services on a new school wind energy initiative. Board members said they are interested in receiving more information about this project.
Superintendent Mike Necessary said Randolph Eastern Superintendent Cathy Stephen has informed her contacts on the wind energy project that RS would like to be involved as well.
Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Suellen Reed recently visited Union City Community High School to examine its alternative energy program and said she hoped the ideas in use there would be shared with other schools.
The board also accepted the resignation of English academic team coach Judy Mahuron. Mahuron has been Randolph Southern High School English academic team coach since 1988 and is the only English academic team coach the school has ever had in its illustrious Academic Super Bowl competition history. The RSHS English academic team has earned 10 state titles in its 20-year history, a state record for most titles in one discipline.
Mahuron's resignation is effective as of the end of the 2007-2008 school year. She will continue to teach high school Spanish and college-level English, as well as coordinating all academic teams at Randolph Southern.
Necessary also noted that the Randolph Southern Board was recently recognized by the Indiana School Board Association as an outstanding board. Board members Keith Hart and Barb Hines have received ISBA level one certification and board member Ron Stephan achieved the association's level two designation.
The board approved the Tail Wagging Tutors Program which allows elementary age students to read one-on-one with Sawyer Brown, a trained therapy dog. Students who have difficult with reading will spend time reading to the dog.
Board members also agreed to offer a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for vandalism done to the Randolph Southern track on or about Sept. 2. Information regarding this crime should be submitted to school officials. The identity of anyone providing information will be kept confidential.
The board's next meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria.
