Police raid at

UCI bar nets 3

Three Union City, Ind., residents were arrested Friday in a police raid on a local bar.

Officers from the Indiana State Excise Police, Union City Police Department, Randolph County Sheriff's Department, Randolph County Probation Department, and Indiana State Police (Redkey District), raided two Union City, Indiana taverns simultaneously early Friday morning.

The arrests were a result of complaints of intoxicated patrons fighting over the past several weeks at the City Cafe and Fast Eddies. The raid, which involved 39 officers from local police agencies, was carried out at 12:30 a.m. Officers arrested the City Cafe owner and her husband, as well as a cafe patron. There were no arrests or violations at Fast Eddies.

"We have received multiple complaints on these establishments involving fights between intoxicated patrons," said Union City Police Chief Bill Bradbury. "We have an obligation to the citizens of Union City to make our city a safe environment for all."

Indiana State Excise Police Sergeant Greg Wiese said the efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies working together for a common cause were exemplified in the raid.

"We will continue these efforts as needed to insure that these locations comply with the law," Wiese said.

Redkey District State Police commander Lieutenant Mike Nichols said the men and women of the Indiana State Police are committed to assist local law enforcement agencies when called upon.

"We will be at the ready when needed," he said.

Those arrested and their preliminary charges:

City Cafe owner Kimberly S. Carpenter, 48, of 307 W. Pearl St., Apt 1 Union City, Ind., was charged with possession of marijuana, a Class "A" misdemeanor; possession of paraphernalia, a Class "A" misdemeanor; possession of a legend drug, a Class "D" felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class "D" felony; and maintaining a common nuisance, a Class "D" felony

She was incarcerated a the Randolph county jail where she is being held on a $4,000 bond.

Timothy E. Carpenter, 47, (husband of Kimberly S. Carpenter) also of 307 W. Pearl St., Apt 1, Union City, Ind., was arrested on an active warrant from Adams County. He was charged with possession of marijuana, a Class "A" misdemeanor; possession of paraphernalia, a Class "A" misdemeanor; dealing in marijuana, a Class "A" misdemeanor; possession of a legend drug, a Class "D" felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class "D" felony; and maintaining a common nuisance, a Class "D" felony.

He was incarcerated at the Randolph County Jail on a $4,000 bond.

Also arrested was City Cafe patron Paul J. Gray, 44, of 303 Emerald Dr., Union City, Ind. Gray was charged with possession of marijuana, a Class "A" misdemeanor. He was transported to Randolph County Jail where he is being held on a $1,000 bond.
