St. Vincent Randolph Hospital held its second annual Safety Day for Kids Saturday, May 19 at the 4-H Fairgrounds. The program included several interactive safety activities for local youth.

Kids learned about chemical safety, the importance of labeling household cleaning and chemical products and good hand washing technique through the use of glitter bug and a black light. Participants had to pass the "hand washing test" before eating lunch.

Dana Calhoun taught the chemical safety session. Denise Comer, Director of Clinical Education at SVR, taught hands-on CPR. Each participant got to do his or her 30 compressions on one of the CPR resuscitation mannequins. White River Fire Department members, Stacey Lewis, Jeremiah Buffenbarger and Brad Newbauer, taught fire safety- including how and when to use a fire extinguisher. Each child had the opportunity to use a fire extinguisher. WRFD representatives also demonstrated fire truck tanker operations.

The kids also learned the danger points of farm machinery, such as the power take-off (PTO) and moving parts on a tractor and attached equipment. Janette Bosler showed kids the different items in a first aid kit, the purpose of each item and then each child put together a first aid kit to take home with them. Each of the participants received a Safety Day t-shirt and lunch.

Safety Day was sponsored by Progressive Agriculture and the St. Vincent Randolph Farm Health Initiative.
