Winchester basketball camp begins May 31

The 2005 Winchester Community High School "Camp of Champions" boys' basketball camp will be held May 31-June 3 at Driver Middle School gym.

The camp will be conducted by Winchester varsity coach Chip Mehaffey and other members of the Golden Falcon coaching staff. Winchester high school players will also assist in the camp.

The camp features daily fundamental instruction, an emphasis on positive attitude building, daily special awards, daily team games, various skill competitions and highlight films. Instructional emphasis will be placed on shooting, offensive fundamentals, defensive fundamentals, rebounding and mental aspects.

Coach Mehaffey recommends that any player who hopes to some day play high school basketball should attend this camp.

Camp times are 8-10 a.m. for grades 4-6, 10-11:30 a.m. for grades 2-3 and 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. for grades 7-9. All grades are based on the campers grade this fall.

Trophies and medals will be awarded and t-shirts will be given to all campers.

Pre-registration camp fee is $30 if paid by Friday, May 13. Late registration is $33 if paid after May 13. There is a "family bonus" that deducts $5 off for each additional camper from the same family. Make checks payable to Chip Mehaffey. Forms are available at each school office.

Randolph County YMCA Corporate Challenge

Right now (or soon) is the time to register for the annual 2005 Randolph County YMCA Corporate Challenge.

Time is winding down to make your commitment, so YMCA event coordinator Tom Byrum is reminding participants to talk to your coordinator and get signed up for one, two, or all 15 events.

"We're expecting this to be one of the most exciting years ever for the Corporate Challenge," Byrum says.

First on the agenda is the Walk, held on the YMCA trails, scheduled for June 3-10.

Cost for the events remains at an affordable $12 per person. The fee covers any or all of the events. There are additional costs for some events.

Each company has the option of purchasing a Corporate Challenge t shirt.

Farmland Lions Club golf outing

The 3rd Annual Farmland Lions Club Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, June 4 at Hickory Hills Golf Club beginning at 8:30 a.m. All golfers and hackers are welcome to bring three friends and have some fun. If you don't have a team, we will find you a team. Entry fee is $40 per person or $160 per team and includes a cart a meal. Entry fee must be paid by May 28. Mulligans can be purchased at 3 for $5. There is an optiional "skins" game. Hole sponsorship is available for $25 per hole. Prizes will be based on a team team minimum and will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams. There will also be a prize for Closest to the Line and Closest to the Pin. Mens' teams wanted for

Winchester Adult Softball League

The Winchester Men's Adult Softball League is accepting mens' teams for 2005. Entry fee is $325 with six softballs provided. Games will be held on Monday and Thursday nights beginning on May 23. For more information, contact Robert Cooper at 260-701-1486 or Shane Roderick at 765-468-8030.

Free physicals offered at RS

Free physicals for the 2005-06 school year are being offered for Randolph Southern students at Dr. Wegg's office on May 21. Students may sign up for the physicals at the high school or elementary office.

T-Ball (for Kids ages 4-6)

Sign-up now for Randolph County YMCA Tee Ball. Tee Ball has two divisions with younger players (minor league) practicing once a week and play their games on the field located at Driver Middle School (small soccer field). The older kids (major league) practice and play game the Lions Club Diamond in Goodrich Park. Parents are being ask to sign up and help coach. The season runs from June 13 through July 21. Cost is $9 which includes a tee shirt.

Summer Camp

Tennis Lessons

The YMCA's summer tennis lessons have grown in popularity each season. Class size is limited, so sign up early. Six week program starts June 6. No lessons the weeks of June 13 and July 11. Jessica Weigand is the instructor. Lessons are twice a week, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but may vary. Time is 8:30-10 a.m. Cost is $30 for Y members and $40 for non-members (T-Shirt is included).

Tumbling Camp

This four-day camp, July 18-21, combines skills taught during our tumbling program along with other fun activities. Registrations must be turned in by July 1 to receive a camp t-shirt. For children in fourth grade and younger. Instructor is Sheri Ward. Camp time is 9-11 a.m. Cost (including t-shirt) is $13 for YMCA members and $26 for program participants.

Youth Swim Lessons

There have been some changes to progressive swim lessons for youth. Lessons have been lengthened to 45 minutes, but only two time slots are available, 9-9:45 a.m. or 9:55-10:40 a.m. Cost is $18 for members and $26 for program participants. Session 1 is June 6-15, Session 2 is June 20-29, Session 3 is July 5-14, Session 4 is July 18-27 and Session 5 is Aug. 1-10.

Swimnastics

A morning aquatic exercise class for adults that shares the pool with swim lessons and follows the same schedule. Instructor is Dixie Batt. Time is 9:45-10:45 a.m. Cost is $9 for members and $13 for program participants.

Water Aerobics

An evening aquatic exercise class. Water aerobics will meet twice a week per each four-week session. Instructors are Anne Taylor and Krista Kritsch. Time is 5:30-6:30 p.m. usually Mondays and Wednesdays but may vary. Cost (no t-shirt) is $11 for and $33 for program participants. Session 1 is June 6-29. Session 2 is July 5-27.
